Robert Downey Jr will take the lead role in a new take on Doctor Dolittle.

According to Variety, the Iron Man and Sherlock star will play the beloved Victorian-era physician with unique abilities in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, which will be written and directed by Stephen Gaghan, whose latest film Gold is out next month on DVD and Blu-ray.

Based on the 1920s children’s books by Hugh Lofting, Doctor Dolittle was first played on screen by Rex Harrison in the musical version. More recently he was portrayed by Eddie Murphy, with the 1998 family comedy going on to spawn four sequels.
