The hand-painted movie poster has given us many iconic images over the decades. More than just a promotional tool, they are a work of art, albeit a dying one in an era where digital motion posters and photoshopped montages have largely replaced illustrated designs.
In the ’70s and ’80s in particular, a fantastic movie poster could generate as much excitement for an upcoming film as a new trailer dropping on YouTube does today. And sometimes the posters were better than the film they were advertising.
To celebrate the art of a great movie poster, we’ve selected 100 of them. This isn’t a compilation of the ‘Greatest Posters of All Time’ – although many of them are – but simply 100 knockout posters that we love, and hope that you do too. There are classics from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s (surely the golden age of poster art), as well as more contemporary, obscure and outrageous examples across a broad range of genres.
