Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror masterpiece is surprisingly, given the title, low on gore; it’s what he does with your head that you’ll never forget. Purportedly made with mafia money, a seemingly peaceful nostalgic summer trip into the blistering Texas landscape turns into a veritable nightmare of brutal slayings, terrifying pursuits and a decaying house of butchery. Its influence on the horror genre is indisputable, and while it has spawned countless sequels and reboots, none have been able to capture the charnel stench of Hooper’s original.
