“30, 000 people are reported missing in Australia every year. Ninety per cent are found within a month. Some are never seen again.” Writer-director Greg McLean’s harrowing homegrown horror brilliantly exploits the isolation of the outback, where nobody can hear you scream. However, the film wouldn’t be nearly as effective without the bravura performance from John Jarratt, who turns the Aussie larrikin stereotype into a sadistic madman who preys on backpackers.
