The Green Planet
Release date: April 13

If you’re a 4K Ultra HD convert and you haven’t had the pleasure of revelling in one of Sir David Attenborough’s absolutely stunning nature series on the format, then this just may be a very good place to start.

The Green Planet is the latest documentary from the natural world’s greatest champion, taking us deep into the secret life of plants all over our incredibly diverse planet, presenting our Earth from their perspective.

Running to five parts, each of which falls just shy of an hour in length, they’re loosely categorised into the worlds of ‘Tropical’, ‘Water’, Seasonal’, Desert’ and ‘Human’. Each of these episodes introduces us to a set of plants, then reveals the battles that they face, and the inventive ways that they’ve devised over time in order to survive.

The series takes us to microscopic levels that the human eye just can’t capture, and has been a long time in the making – some 20 years in fact. In many ways it’s a sequel to 1995’s fascinating The Secret Life of Plants, but the advances in filming technology since then have led to even more brilliant discoveries.

As for the disc itself, all five episodes are presented in native 4K, that at times can look much like your screen is a window directly to this fascinating real world, with HDR just bolstering that reality. If that’s not exciting enough a prospect, the entire aural experience comes to us in Dolby Atmos. As a bonus, a ~40-minute behind-the-scenes making-of presentation entitled On Location delivers a fascinating look at the technological magic that the BBC team pull off to bring us such astonishing footage.
