Annette Bening is the first star to be confirmed for Katrina: American Crime Story, the follow-up to the award-winning TV hit The People vs. O.J. Simpson.

Bening will play Kathleen Blanco, who was the Governor of Louisiana during and after Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005 and remains America’s costliest natural disaster.

No word yet on other casting – Will Ferrell or Josh Brolin for President George W. Bush?  – but Katrina will be executive produced by the The People v O.J. Simpson team of Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.

Bening will next be seen in Mike Mills’ acclaimed drama 20th Century Women; check out the trailer below.

Meanwhile, Nurse Jackie star Edie Falco has been cast in Law & Order: True Crime – The Menendez Murders, which like American Crime Story will be a limited run series based on a sensational US criminal case.

Falco will play Leslie Abramson, the tenacious defence lawyer for Lyle and Erik Menendez, the brothers who were convicted in 1996 of murdering their parents.
