Benedict Cumberbatch has begun filming The Child In Time, the first project from his production company.

Based on the novel by Ian McEwan, Cumberbatch takes the lead role in the BBC TV movie, which also stars Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Stephen Campbell Moore (The History Boys) and Saskia Reeves (Luther). The Child In Time is a joint production between Pinewood Television and SunnyMarch TV, the company founded by Cumberbatch and Adam Ackland.

“I read the novel years ago and it stayed with me – profound, beautiful and very moving,” the Sherlock star says. “I’m so proud The Child In Time will be the first drama produced by SunnyMarch TV.”

The Child In Time tells the story of a children’s author Stephen Lewis (Cumberbatch) who struggles to find a purpose in his life following the disappearance of his daughter.

Cumberbatch’s next SunnyMarch project will be the mini-series Melrose, while feature film projects in development include The War Magician, which will tell the story of colourful British stage musician Jasper Maskelyne, and an adaptation of Matt Haig’s fantasy novel How To Stop Time.
