Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes and Yvonne Strahovski head the cast of a new TV version of Margaret Atwood’s award-winning novel The Handmaid’s Tale.

Premiering in the US at the end of April, it’s set in Gilead, a totalitarian society ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world.

The Handmaid’s Tale has been filmed once before in 1990, with Natasha Richardson in the lead role, but this could prove to be the definitive version of Atwood’s classic novel.
