What would you do if you’d planned a beautiful, romantic holiday to Ecuador with your rockstar boyfriend (in this case Randall Park), only to have him dump you on getaway’s eve? In Emily’s (Amy Schumer) case, she drags along her adventure-cautious mother (Goldie Hawn).
What should have been a relaxing vacation for the pair turns into a fight for survival after Emily and her mother are kidnapped by a local gang while on a day trip, and forced to escape their captors and get to the U.S. Embassy. This involves everything from hitching a ride in the back of a ute to trekking through the Amazonian jungle, and even fighting off a nasty tapeworm that looks more like a chestburster!
In the meantime, Emily’s brother (rising star Ike Barinholtz) is trying to coordinate U.S. teams to rescue his family, and a couple that Emily and her mother met at the holiday resort – a hilarious pairing of Wanda Sykes and a mute Joan Cusack – are attempting to get to their rescue too. Will they make it out in one piece?
Goldie Hawn hasn’t starred in a film in 15 years, so it’s safe to assume that young fans of Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck – who are venturing out to see this – may not even know she’s a bona fide screen legend. That potentially works in Snatched‘s favour, as Hawn’s potty mouth reigns supreme. It’s a meeting of comedy generations that fans of both women will love.
Snatched is an enjoyable, unhinged tropical romp, with plenty of crude humour and more than a few laugh-out-loud moments to get you through.
