It’s the second Tuesday of July, so it’s Cow Appreciation Day! Started as part of an ad campaign for a chicken fast food place in the US, many now recognise it as a day to give thanks to moovers and (milk) shakers in pastures the world over. So, in honour of our bovine buddies, here are ten classic cow-centric scenes from ten classic cow-medy moo-vies (urgh, sorry)…

WARNING: You may encounter the odd bit of black humour or language…

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

We could have fast-forwarded you straight to “Fetchez la vache!”, but who’d want to miss out on beefier kerniggety action from the Monty Python team’s greatest movie?

Blazing Saddles (1974)

Mel Brooks’ masterpiece western pastiche was great on way too many levels to mention. The arrival of Mongo is just one tiny bit of silliness in a movie that’s held together by the stuff.

City Slickers (1991)

Billy Crystal’s calf Norman faces abhorrent bull-ying in this scene from the first City Slickers. Spoiler for anybody worried for his well-being: He returned in City Slickers II.

Year One (2009)

Where Jack Black proves that not only is he a really crap caveman, he’s also a really crap cowboy. It’s time to raze the steaks.

Top Secret! (1984)

Alright, be an arsehole! When promoting this follow-up to Flying High, the Zucker brothers knew who was the true star, and it wasn’t Val Kilmer.

Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

A strange movie with a strange attraction to those of the bovine persuasion, we decided that this scene was preferable to one involving a paddock and a bus.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

Will, Will, Will. Didn’t they teach you at uniformed officer school the correct way to fire a warning shot? Poor, poor Mooby…

Kingpin (1996)

Oh eww! Oh ewwy, eww! Oh eww to the power of infinity! Seriously, what a load of bull… Just try to forget ever seeing this the next time you rewatch season one of True Detective.

Tommy Boy (1995)

Tipping cows, eh? That’s so silly – after all, what would they do with money when they don’t have opposable thumbs? Oh, THAT kind of cow tipping!

Kung Pow! Enter the Fist (2002)

Matrix cow, Matrix cow, does whatever a Matrix cow does! Man, it must have taken like FOREVER to train that cow so well in the way of martial arts…
