Predator, Predator 2Predators, and The Predator are all now available on 4K Ultra HD! Here are some fun things you may not have known about the Arnie-toting first instalment.

Predator

What’s in a name?
The movie was originally going to be called Hunter. It was only changed when the design of the Predator was significantly altered partway into production.

Alien

You are my lucky star…
The original pitch for Predator was simply, “Alien in the jungle.” Of course, the two extra-terrestrial baddies later met in the 1990 comic book short story Alien vs. Predator, and many subsequent spin-offs.

Predator

He meant it, maaaan!
In order to look the part of a special ops soldier, Arnie shed more than 25 pounds (just over 11 kilograms) before filming commenced.

Predator

Off to a rocky start…
The Predator shoot interfered with Arnie and Maria Shriver’s wedding plans, with the big guy missing the final preparation for their rehearsal dinner.

Predator

One is the loneliest number
Originally, Arnie’s character Dutch was set to face the Predator solo.

Predator

It’s not a rumour!
Arnie has claimed that his immortal line, “Get to da chopper!” is his all-time personal favourite. Considering some of his lines as the Terminator (and Kimble in Kindergarten Cop), that’s a big call.

Predator

Sharp!
Speaking of great lines, Arnie’s “Stick around!” wasn’t scripted, the big guy just dropped it from nowhere.

Predator

The tall and the short of it
Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally in Predator – as the Predator! He was soon given the flick though, for being too short and also continually whining about how hot it was wearing the original Predator costume. He was replaced by Kevin Peter Hall who, at 7’ 2.5” (2.2 metres!) tall, could never be accused of being too short.

Predator

More than meets the ear
The “voice” of the Predator was supplied by Peter Cullen, who has also voiced Transformer Optimus Prime since he first hit screens back in the 1980s. You may also know Cullen as Eeyore in many of Disney’s Winnie the Pooh tales.

Predator

Rave on!
The gooey, greenish-yellow Predator’s blood was made with a mixture of glow stick innards and KY Jelly. It was originally going to be orange.

Predator

I hate snakes!
Predator
was filmed in Mexico, and it wasn’t without its challenges. These included dealing with snakes, leeches, snakes, crazy humidity, snakes, sweltering heat during the day, snakes, freezing cold at night and more snakes.

Predator

Supermassive Black role!
Predator
was screenwriter Shane Black’s onscreen debut, and when his penmanship talents weren’t being used by producer Joel Silver, he spent his time working on the script for The Last Boy Scout. He has since co-written and directed the fourth film in the Predator franchise – The Predator (2018).
