It’s gonna be yuge. Yuge

2017 is shaping up to be a beautiful year for blockbusters – especially for Marvel fans. Here are my picks of the movies to come this year, in no particular order (except for GotG being at the top. Obviously).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Starlord is back. Groot is as cute as ever. Bradley Cooper is still voicing a raccoon. There are so many reasons to be excited about GotG Vol 2, but I for one cannot wait for Awesome Mix Volume 2.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

The legacy of your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is carried on this time by Tom Holland. If his Captain America: Civil War performance is anything to go by, this is as close to comic spidey as we’ve come yet. The stakes are high.

Thor: Ragnarok

Aussie pride shines strong in the Thor films, with our very own Chris Hemsworth as the almighty Thor Odinson. He (and Hulk) both missed out on Civil War, so this will reveal what they’ve been up to in their absence. Can’t wait.

Don’t cry because it’s over – smile because it happened.

Star Wars Episode VIII

It will be interesting to see which direction the Star Wars films head in following the death of Carrie Fisher. She had already filmed her scenes for Ep 8, so we shouldn’t need to worry about any ethically-questionable CGI inclusions – yet.

Justice League

I grew up on the animated Justice League (Teen Titans ftw), so it’s fair to say I’m pretty keen for this one. The little teases in Batman v Superman were the best parts of that film, but I am quite disappointed at the lack of Starfire.

The LEGO Batman Movie

Surely I don’t actually need to convince you that this will be awesome!? Just check the trailer.

Beauty and the Beast

Has Disney/technology gone too far? A live-action Beauty and the Beast, complete with creepy Mrs Potts and Chip. Gotta start up a cringe tally (even though it will be amazing).

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

I have lost track of the chronology of the Pirates movies and only really remember the first one and the one with the tentacle guy. However, it’s like my mum always used to say: ‘part of the ship, part of the crew’, so this one will get a look-in too.

Kong: Skull Island

Brie Larsen is really growing on me, so I wanna see how she takes down a giant monkey.

Power Rangers

Another childhood memory come to life. Sceptical as to how Elizabeth Banks will do as Rita Repulsa, but if my complete Might Morphin Power Rangers VCR collection has anything to say about it, I’ll be back-row-centre at this one.

Cars 3

Kachow. Cars gets serious?! I hope they give Lightning McQueen a makeover.

Transformers: The Last Knight

The Transformers thing is the same as the Pirates thing in that I’ve kind of lost interest but have dedicated too much of my life to the franchise to completely abandon it, no matter how much of a lost cause it may be. You know, like The Walking Dead.

Ghost in the Shell

I will by no means pretend to be a fan of the anime – I actually know nothing about it, and I’m planning on keeping it that way until I see Johansson’s highly-critiqued (despite-the-film-not-actually-being-out-yet) performance.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

I honestly doubt that anything in a sequel could possibly live up to the unrealistic expectations set by ‘that’ church scene in the first one, but it’s the reason people will show up in the first place, so I’m keen. It also sounds a lot like the werewolf cult from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim‘s Companions Guild.

The Mummy

Brendan who? Guilty pleasure – I liked the Mummy movies, okay. So I dunno how these new ones will go, but at least the plane sequence looks cool.

The Fate of the Furious

This is where I should unload on how preposterous the plot of the new FF movie looks. The fact that Dom would never betray the family like that, the fact that they shouldn’t even have made another one after Furious 7… but, I’m actually hoping that this whole Toretto thing will evolve into some elaborate plot twist at the end. They proved they could do it at the end of Fast 5, but whether or not they’ll be able to recreate it is a whole other kettle of fish. Let’s hope they Dodge a bullet.
