JB Hi-Fi’s North Lakes store in Brisbane doesn’t sell ovens but there are plenty of hot new releases in demand, and customers just can’t get enough of Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.
“We’re going through a lot of copies of A Star Is Born at the moment,” says DVD Media Advisor Jasmine Schmidt, “which is interesting because we always sell a lot of action films here and it’s a musical drama. A lot of people are very excited when they discover that it’s already available to buy. It’s brilliant. I love it! I’m a big fan of Gaga, so I’m a bit biased there,” she laughs.
Kate Beckinsale is another leading lady that Jasmine has high praise for, counting the Underworld franchise as an all-time favourite. “I absolutely love her in it. She’s such a versatile actress – she’s done a bit of everything, from The Last Days of Disco to The Only Living Boy in New York.”
She’s also currently loving Tom Hardy in Taboo, which is her go-to recommendation when customers want something new to watch.
“It’s just a one-off series at the moment, so people are not aware of it. Everyone comes back and tells me how much they like it.”
Indeed, building relationships with customers is Jasmine’s favourite part of the job. “I’m out on the floor a lot organising stuff and putting things away – which is kind of like playing Tetris – and clients of all kinds will come and talk to me to get advice about everything. It’s really crazy. Over Christmas a lot of customers came in, not to buy anything, but just to wish me a ‘Merry Christmas,’ which was lovely.”
JB’s curated promotions are another popular fixture at the North Lakes store, and Jasmine admits she isn’t beyond slipping a few personal favourites from the list onto the Q-railings.
“It’s another way that I can influence customers,” she laughs.
