STACK‘s Roving Reporter drops into JB Hi-Fi’s Melbourne Central store to talk movies and more with Media/Software Advisor Scotty Brady.

JB Hi-Fi Melbourne Central opened its doors just prior to Christmas 2017, and although a relatively new store, it has a veteran on the frontline.

Media/Software Advisor Scotty Brady knows his way around a JB store, having begun his career at the old Camberwell store in Victoria – the second JB and an institution. He then spent four years as DVD Coordinator at Melbourne’s Bourke Street store, before moving up the road and around the corner to Melbourne Central.

Software is a big component of JB Melbourne Central, along with computers, headphones and bluetooth speakers.

“In software we are selling a lot of Anime, because of the high Asian demographic at the centre,” says Scotty, adding that new release titles also move well. “The new Thor film has been massive – it’s walked out the door. We’re about to install a superhero section and a classic section – we always get asked for classic films. People also like the 2 for $20 and Buy 2 Get 1 Free deals.”

At JB Melbourne Central, locating your movie of choice has never been easier.

Blu-ray is another big seller, and the store’s A-Z section combines both DVD and Blu-ray formats, which is working really well, according to Scotty.

4K UHD is also ticking over. “It’s a bit of a niche market at the moment because not everyone has a 4K player,” says Scotty. “There are new titles added all the time, and I’ve given it four bays next door to New Release.”

Not surprisingly, Scotty loves a movie – “I have a big collection, maybe 800 DVDs/TV shows. I like to buy physical copies; special editions with extra discs” – and his favourites include both Razzie and Oscar winners. In the case of the former, the cheesier the better. “Showgirls is one of my highlights. You can’t get a cheesier film than that,” he laughs. “It’s a camp classic – it’s great! And then probably The Silence of the Lambs.”

(The trailer for Showgirls was far too naughty, so here’s Scotty’s second choice…)
