We’re all going on a 4K holiday! Well, we’ll be watching a lot of great new 4K Ultra HD releases at home this summer, at any rate. It’s the latest and greatest video format, bringing some of the best in cool new audio technology along with it, and we love it here at STACK. As such, we’ll continue to keep you right up-to-date with all the new release info, so here’s our 4K December 2017 release round-up…

4K Ultra HD system demo of the month

4K December 2017 - Dunkirk

Dunkirk
Release date: December 18

Christopher Nolan’s lauded WWII tale of Allied soldiers who are up against it when surrounded by the German Army came into our homes, and in style. The 4K Ultra HD version arrived in pure 4K – Nolan loves the format – and complete with standard and IMAX parts, as the director intended his film to be seen. Audiophiles may be miffed at the soundtrack though, which is just a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix, but again that’s how Nolan wanted it. If it’s an issue, take it up with him! We can assure you that this disc is incredible, and one of the best demos for 4K vision that we’ve yet experienced (we have two words for you – “Spitfire” and “beach”). Check out STACK’s movie review here.

What else hit 4K Ultra HD in December?

4K December 2017 - American Made

American Made
Release date: December 6

One of Tom Cruise’s best flicks in a while, he transforms into Barry Seal, an American pilot who became a drug-runner for the CIA in the 1980s. You may know it as the Iran-Contra Affair… Like many recent cinema releases, this cool fun flick comes via an upscaled 2K master, with HDR enhancement. The sound, meanwhile, touches down via DTS:X. WHile some upscales can look rather murky, this one surprised us with its detail. When called upon, the sound mix really delivers, too. Here‘s our movie review.

4K December 2017 - American Assassin

American Assassin
Release date: December 13

Michael Keaton as a badass former US Navy SEAL? It’s worth the price of admission here – and the rest of the cast are pretty cool too in this counterterrorism action thriller. The vision? Yep, upscaled 2K with HDR. The sound, meanwhile, comes via a full-on Dolby Atmos mix which booms and bams in all the right places. In a rather uncommon move, the bonus five featurettes and a Q&A session are included on the main 4K disc, not just the accompanying Blu-ray. If it doesn’t lower the quality of the main feature then we hope that this happens more. Meanwhile, you can read our movie review right here.

4K December 2017 - The Emoji Movie

The Emoji Movie
Release date: December 13

What a turd! That would be Patrick Stewart having a bit of fun voicing the poop emoji. It isn’t all about him though, as Gene – another emoji – is meh at being meh. This causes all manner of unrest in the otherwise orderly Textopolis. Animation usually tends to shine in 4K, even when it’s via an upscaled 2K presentation such as this – yay HDR! Meanwhile, get your aural emoji experience via Dolby Atmos. Our movie review is able to be read here.

4K December 2017 - Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Release date: December 20

The sequel to the fab James Bond-inspired spy/action romp The Secret Service sees the American arm of Kingsman putting up our heroic and stoic spies after the UK HQ is kind of destroyed. Say hello to another upscaled 2K transfer with HDR, accompanied by a high-flying Dolby Atmos sound mix. Want to read our movie review? Just click here.

4K December 2017 - The LEGO Ninjago Movie

The LEGO Ninjago Movie
Release date: December 20

One for the little (or big) LEGO fan in your life, this tale of secret high school ninjas, their master (voiced by Jackie Chan, no less) and the big bad four-armed Garmadon is frantic, funny and fun. You can likely guess the video format by now, while Dolby Atmos gets the gig for sound. The latter gives your speakers a full-on workout, while the vision is very good for what it is. Our movie review is readable right about here.

He may be a little late in being back, but Arnie in one of his most iconic roles is finally here after a couple of 4K false starts. As well as toting an Uzi 9mm, he also has newly-remastered full 4K vision with HDR enhancement that was overseen by James Cameron. Sound comes via 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Batman Begins/The Dark Knight/The Dark Knight Rises
Release date: December 18

Three of the best Bat treatments ever hit individually all on the same day, all boasting fully remastered 4K transfers (with HDR) – the two DK flicks featuring hybrid widescreen to show off the IMAX parts to best effect. As mentioned in our Dunkirk bit above, Christopher Nolan is a huge fan of 4K. He’s not a big fan of Atmos or DTS:X, however, so look forward to 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio sound. Want reviews? Batman Begins is here, The Dark Knight is here and The Dark Knight Rises is here.
