February wasn’t the biggest month for 4K Ultra HD releases after the summer break, but with two new flicks and two classic movie franchises popping up it still gave us lots to like. You may have gathered by now that we’re totally in love with the 4K format here at STACK, so we’re going to continue to keep you right up to date with all the latest release info. Now, here’s our 4K February 2018 round-up…

4K Ultra HD system demo of the month

4K February 2018 - The Purge: Election Year

The Purge: Election Year
Release date: February 7

While there were several great releases this month, none of them really set our systems on fire with incredible pure 4K visuals or Dolby Atmos wallop, but what is arguably the best instalment of The Purge did rock the foundations. The last one until The First Purge hits cinemas mid-year, this takes place 17 years after Anarchy, with Leo Barnes the head of security for a US presidential candidate. During the annual purge he must fight to protect his charge, after they’re left out on the streets of DC. This is an upscaled 2K release featuring HDR, coupled with a pleasingly chunky new DTS:X sonic assault. Click here for our full review of the 4K release.

What other new releases hit 4K Ultra HD in February?

4K February 2018 - Cloverfield

Cloverfield
Release date: February 7

The one that started it all, the original monster-infused Cloverfield hit 4K Ultra HD with an upscaled transfer – which doesn’t really make much difference as it was made to look like “found” footage – complete with Dolby Vision (if you’ve got it) and standard HDR enhancement. While we’d have loved a full-on Atmos or DTS:X sonic extravaganza, audio comes via the already existing – and rather beefy – Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix. Read our 4K review here.

4K February 2018 - 10 Cloverfield Lane

`

10 Cloverfield Lane
Release date: February 7

Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is having a crappy day. She’s left her boyfriend, and is driving through Louisiana when, after being distracted by her phone, she ends up in a horrific car accident and is rendered unconscious. Sadly, things are about to get even crappier… Michelle awakes in a cell of some sort, chained to the wall. She meets Howard (John Goodman), who appears to be a doomsday prepper. He tells Michelle that there’s been a major attack upon the world outside,  it’s now uninhabitable and if not for him being her rescuer then she’d be dead. Then there’s this guy Emmett (John Gallagher Jr), what’s his story? Can this trio be happy underground? This wonderfully Hitchcockian affair hits 4K Ultra HD via an HDR and Dolby Vision-enhanced 2K upscale, and carries a Dolby Atmos mix in the audio department. Check out STACK’s 4K review here.

4K February 2018 - The Purge

The Purge
Release date: February 7

Another great fun franchise hit 4K Ultra HD in February, with this one introducing us to the concept of the titular purge. That’s a period of 12 hours annually in which all crime is legalised, and all essential services take a well-earned break. While the HDR-enhanced vision comes via a 2K upscale, a thumping new DTS:X mix has been created, which really lets loose. Find out more of our thoughts in our review of the 4K release here.

The Purge continues… Following three sets of people on the night of the annual purge, like the first one (above), this features an HDR-enhanced upscaled 2K transfer accompanied by a brand new DTS:X sound mix. Our 4K review is right about here.

4K February 2018 - Daddy's Home

Daddy’s Home
Release date: February 28

Will Ferrell (as Brad) and Mark Wahlberg (as Dusty) duke it out daddy style in this comedic tale of modern family life. An upscaled 2K transfer with HDR (and Dolby Vision) enhancement is the order of the day visually, while sound has been given a DTS:X makeover.

4K February 2018 - Daddy's Home 2

Daddy’s Home 2
Release date: February 28

Hot out of the cinemas, the daddy issues multiply as the grandfathers – Mel Gibson and John Lithgow – land at Christmas, just when Brad and Dusty thought that they had things sorted. It’s another upscaled 2K affair with HDR – or Dolby Vision if your gear supports it – accompanied by only the second Dolby Atmos mix this month. Read STACK‘s movie review here.
