There wasn’t a lot of new release action on 4K Ultra HD in January, as everybody nursed their New Year’s hangovers, but the four new titles that did hit were all pretty big. As you likely know by now, we love the 4K format here at STACK, so we’ll continue to keep you right up-to-date with all the new release info. Anyway, here’s the 4K January 2018 release round-up…

4K Ultra HD system demo of the month

Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049
Release date: January 17

It may not have set the box office records ablaze, but Blade Runner 2049 appears to be following in its forebear’s footsteps by slow burning a cult following. The story? Set 30 years after the first film, a new blade runner discovers a secret that could plunge what’s left of society into chaos. So begins a quest to find former LAPD blade runner Rick Deckard, who’s been missing for 30 years. The disc comes to us in an HDR-enhanced (or Dolby Vision if you have all of the right equipment) form in beautiful almost-full 4K, giving cinematographer Roger Deakins’ work a chance to really shine. It really does look a treat. Meanwhile, a crisp Dolby Atmos soundtrack will really get your home theatre jumping – and, at times, thumping. Check out STACK’s movie review here.

What other new releases hit 4K Ultra HD in January?

The Mountain Between Us
Release date: January 10

Kate Winslet and Idris Elba go up in a plane and come down on a mountain. Another upscaled 2K transfer with HDR enhancement, this release totes a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 sound mix, and a commentary by director Hany Abu-Assad. Here‘s our movie review.

It
Release date: January 17

AGH! Creepy clown is creepy – especially in 4K! Yes, Stephen King’s tale of ‘The Losers Club’ and their encounters with Pennywise the clown finally springs to life on 4K Ultra HD with an upscaled 2k transfer that features Dolby Vision if you’re one of the few whose gear fully supports it. Standard HDR is the go for those without it, and it really makes scenes that should pop pop – especially those red balloons (where, we guess, popping is appropriate). All the aural frights – and there are some mighty jump scares to be had – come via a cool Dolby Atmos mix. You can read our movie review right here.

Mother

Mother!
Release date: January 17

Darren Aronofsky’s head-scratching tale of Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem – who live in a house, a very big house in the country – and their unexpected guests is an interesting one on 4K Ultra HD. The transfer is an HDR-enhanced 2K upscale, and with the way the movie was shot on 16mm film and heavily processed it’s in no way a top demo disc of the 4K format, but it still looks better than the Blu-ray. A Dolby Atmos mix accompanies the bizarre proceedings, and duly goes to town when appropriate. Our movie review is here.
