There are no signs of our love for 4K Ultra HD abating at STACK, in fact we’re getting more excited about the format every month. Why? So many great new releases – and so many classic movies looking better than we’ve ever seen them before. We intend to keep you bang up-to-date with all the new release info, so here’s our 4K November 2017 release round-up…

4K Ultra HD system demo of the month

4K November 2017 - The Dark Tower

The Dark Tower
Release date: November 29

Stephen King’s been as big as ever this year, and this fantasy adventure starring Idris Elba comes to Ultra HD with a suitably big and rather stunning pure 4K transfer that has both standard HDR and Dolby Vision encoding. Audio duties, meanwhile, are handled most ably by a Dolby Atmos mix. Want to read our movie review? Just click here.

What else hit 4K Ultra HD in November?

4K November 2017 - Westworld

Westworld: Season One – The Maze
Release date: November 8

The first scripted TV series to make it to 4K Ultra HD (only the magnificent Planet Earth II documentary beat it), we hope it’s a trend that takes off. Michael Crichton’s collision of the future and the past comes as a superbly packaged three-disc set, toting 2K upscaled transfers with HDR enhancement, and a specially-produced Dolby Atmos mix for each episode that adds a certain oomph to proceedings. Read our more specific thoughts on the 4K release here.

4K November 2017 - Atomic Blonde

Atomic Blonde
Release date: November 15

Charlize Theron exercises her action muscles again, in what could be loosely described as a female-led take on John Wick – and we mean that as a compliment. Shot digitally, the looks come via an upscaled 2K transfer with HDR (or Dolby Vision if all of your equipment supports it), and the differences between the general bleakness and occasional pops of hyper-colour really work well. Speaking of doing its job, the sounds come via a full-on, glorious-to-behold DTS:X mix that benefits both action and soundtrack. You can read our movie review right here.

4K November 2017 - Baby Driver

Baby Driver
Release date: November 15

It may have got caught at the traffic lights, so it released two weeks after the DVD and Blu-ray, but it was very much worth the wait. Cars are important in Edgar Wright’s action-fuelled heist drama, but the music is just as critical. The all-encompassing Dolby Atmos track here is an absolute cracker, and easily one of the best that we’ve heard – and we’ve heard a lot of them by now! Meanwhile, the vision is an HDR-infused upscaled 2K transfer, the sumptuousness of which often belies its non-4K origins. Check out STACK’s movie review here.

War for the Planet of the Apes

War for the Planet of the Apes
Release date: November 15

They’re finally making a monkey out of 4K – well, they’re finally released the third movie in the trilogy. The brutal conclusion to this Apes series, this one features another HDRified upscaled 2K transfer, along with a Dolby Atmos mix that sounds quite awesome. Our movie review is able to be read here.

But the monkey business on 4K Ultra HD didn’t stop there this month, with all three movies available in a handy 4K trilogy pack that was released on the same day, exclusive to JB Hi-Fi. They all feature identically-specced transfers to the new one, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes having DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes upgraded to 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

4K November 2017 - The Hitman's Bodyguard

The Hitman’s Bodyguard
Release date: November 29

We always love a decent good buddy/bad buddy flick, and The Hitman’s Bodyguard definitely fits the bill. Thrill to Deadpool and Nick Fury being at each others’ throats for an entire action blast, and with an almost full 4K transfer to boot (if you want to get technical, it’s 3.4K upscaled to 4K) What does that mean? It means it looks really good! Meanwhile, Dolby Atmos gets the gig for sound, and has fun with its role. Our movie review is readable right about here.

Back catalogue on 4K Ultra HD in November

17 back catalogue releases. 17! The world of 4K Ultra HD discs is really hotting up at the pointy end of 2017. It’ll be a lot of watching, but we aim to have reviews up as close to release as possible for each of these 4K newbies.

4K November 2017 - Spider-Man

Spider-Man 1, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3
Release date: November 1

All three of the Tobey Maguire Spidey flicks swung in on the one day, and all given the treatment that our friendly neighbourhood protector deserves. Each of the movies boasts a full 4K transfer, and each has a remixed Dolby Atmos soundtrack to sling the sounds all around. Want to read our 4K Ultra HD trilogy review? Please just click here.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Release date: November 1

We always thought that Jim Carrey a rather nice chap, but then he decided to ruin Christmas for the pleasant folk of Whoville. OK, so of course he was acting as Dr Seuss’ nasty old Grinch, and good news is that Universal haven’t been particularly stingy with this release. While not a pure 4K presentation, it’s a wildly colourful experience that sounds great with its shiny new DTS:X audio track, too. Our more in-depth review is right here.

A Few Good Men
Release date: November 15

Wow, it’s been 25 years since Jack Nicholson dropped that immortal line, “You can’t handle the truth!” To celebrate the anniversary, A Few Good Men springs to attention with a new full-4K Ultra HD transfer that’s accompanied by a new Dolby Atmos audio track. You’ll likely feel as if Jack’s right there in the room with you. Eep! Read our thoughts on the release in our review, here.

The Bridge On the River Kwai
Release date: November 15

The anniversaries continue, with David Lean’s WWII epic celebrating 60 years since release. It’s not every day that a film of this vintage comes to 4K, and it’s a move to be applauded (more please!) A full-4K transfer, this also receives a fresh Dolby Atmos soundtrack that surprised us with its quality.

Harry Potter
Release date: November 22

In a move that wasn’t entirely logical, the last four Harry Potter flicks came out back in March. Now the first four have caught up and, unlike the previous quartet which had upscaled 2K transfers, these go the full 4K. Meanwhile, like the other four, they’re all accompanied by DTS:X sound. If you didn’t happen to get those earlier releases, you can grab all eight movies in one neat little box set. You can also read our deeper look at the complete Harry Potter on 4K Ultra HD here.

Men in Black
Release date: November 29

There’s no stopping the anniversary party, as it’s 20 years since Men in Black first brought its X-Files-inspired brilliance to our screens. We don’t know whether it’s alien tech that gave us three pure 4K transfers from the original camera negatives here, but we don’t care. Coupled with new Dolby Atmos audio, we can’t wait to do a triple treat binge with these (another way of saying that they didn’t make it in time for a review to be included here, but we’re hoping that they’ll beam in soon).

Transformers
Release date: November 29

More than meets the eye, four times and all in pure new 4K transfers? Yes please! Michael Bay’s effects-laden action explosions are sure to look the part with such detailed transfers, and with newly-created Dolby Atmos sound they’re sure to sound spectacular as well. This is another selection of back catalogue releases that we hope to be able to give you a review for soon.
