Samurai battles have always been fascinating to watch, be they in classic Japanese films or modern western ones. Now we get to hear what a master thinks of them.
Kaito Suiju is a master of the Hisui school of battōjutsu, as well as an instructor at Hisui Tokyo, who is of samurai descent. In the video below from the fine Insider people Master Suiju rates the realism of katana sword scenes in movies, taking in the skills of the actors, the way they hold their swords and the fight choreography.
That’s fascinating enough, but Master Suiju also speaks about many of the myths and legends around samurai culture that Hollywood may not necessarily have gotten right over the years.
Amongst the included films are Japanese-language titles such as Yojimbo and The Sword of Doom, while the Hollywood selection includes John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, The Last Samurai and Kill Bill: Vol.1.
Meanwhile, if you’d like even more samurai action, the PS4 exclusive game Ghost of Tsushima launches on July 17.
