Soon after the original PlayStation console launched in 1995 came the mad vehicular mayhem of Twisted Metal. Now it’s set to hit TVs in a different way, starring Anthony Mackie.

Mackie is set to star as main protagonist – and milkman – John Doe, according to the fine people at Deadline.

Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are on board, alongside Cobra Kai writer Michael Jonathan Smith. It basically sounds like a cross between The Cannonball Run and Mad Max, with a bit of horror chucked in, mainly because of the franchise’s ultra-creepy clown Needles Kane, who drives the classic Sweet Tooth.

The official line goes like this: “The action comedy follows a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.”

The last Twisted Metal game was a reboot, released in 2012 for the PS3, so a new game is well overdue. It could be time for a tie-in…

If you’ve never had the pleasure, here’s a trailer for that PS3 version:
