The Austin Powers flicks from Mike Myers – that’s the Wayne’s World one and not the Halloween one, Baby Driver fans – had a ball spoofing the 007 films and generally worshipping ’60s era Britishness. But is our now “woke” world prepared for a new instalment?
Powers was sexist, crude and all sorts of other things that the 21st century has rightfully questioned – but that was actually the whole point. Austin wasn’t just a 1960s throwback, he was literally somebody from the ’60s brought into the future. He had a lot of PC to adjust to.
Also, regardless, he was kind of endearing.
Anyway, while doing the red carpet thing for Bohemian Rhapsody, in which Myers has a small part, he was asked about the possibility of the return of everybody’s – OK, many peoples’ – favourite shag monster by Access Online, and the news was kind of positive, while still hedging bets.
“Well, you’re going to see Dr Evil soon, somewhere in the culture. But the movie – you know, I’ve had three kids under the age of seven – they take a long time to write, they always have. Jay’s been super crazy… it’s looking good, so we’ll see.”
The “Jay” referred to is Jay Roach, who directed the original trilogy of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers in Goldmember.
As for potential plots, with certain familial revelations in Goldmember, it looks like it would be up to Scott Evil to make good with his plans to deal with Powers. BWAH-HA-HA, etc.
We loved the original trilogy, but we’re not sure whether Austin has another round left in him to fire. Or maybe it’s just that we couldn’t deal with all the bad impersonations starting up again from dads everywhere? Oh behave!
