Following a couple of teasers and a sneak peek of the opening five minutes, the official trailer for Roland Emmerich’s new sci-fi movie, Moonfall, has arrived.

So, what has the master of disaster behind Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 cooked up for us this time?

A mysterious force knocks the moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson), and conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley) believe her. The unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space only to find out that our moon is not what we think it is.”

That’s the official synopsis, which leaves one BIG question: “What the heck is the moon if it’s not the moon?”

Combining elements of Armageddon, The Core and the aforementioned Emmerich disaster flicks, Moonfall looks like the kind of cheesy fun and pure spectacle that needs to be experienced on the biggest screen possible when it opens in cinemas here on February 3.
