Rumours have swirled for a while, but now it’s been confirmed – Patrick Stewart will return to the space boots of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek TV series.
There’s no room for doubt, either, with Stewart announcing the news both at a Star Trek fan convention at the weekend, and via his Twitter account…
It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Read my full statement in the photo. #StarTrek @cbsallaccess Photo: @shervinfoto pic.twitter.com/8Ynuj3RBNm

Despite no further details being available currently – will we get a full series, or a miniseries? Will it be ongoing, or a one-off? – it’s momentous news for Star Trek fans, with one of the most beloved characters ever returning.
Then there’s the question as to what sort of story we’ll be getting – will Picard still be in service? Will he be retired on the farm? Perhaps he’s seen the future in plastic food storage and started selling Tupperware?
Obviously we await further details with anticipation.
