Groundbreaking romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians – the first major studio film in 25 years to feature an all-Asian cast – has blitzed the Australian box office, grossing $5.22 million in its opening weekend.

A weekend of advance previews previews brings the combined local box office to $7.34 million, building on the momentum of the film’s history-making #1 debut in North America, where it has become a cultural and box office phenomenon topping the previous record for a rom-com set by Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck in 2015.

Based on the bestseller by Kevin Kwan and directed by Jon M. Chu, Crazy Rich Asians follows a New Yorker (Constance Wu) and her boyfriend (Henry Golding) to Singapore for his best best friend’s wedding, where she discovers her partner is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families, but also its most-eligible bachelor.
