We’ve had Battleship, Ouija, Clue… So why can’t Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots join in all of the board game-inspired movie fun?
Turns out it can, and it’ll involve big man Vin Diesel. He’s behind plans for a live action take on the red vs blue plastic robot biffo game, and also intends to star.
Apparently the story will revolve around a father and son who strike an unlikely bond with an advanced war machine. Hmm, shades of The Iron Giant…
The screenplay comes from somebody already adept at converting a different type of game to the screen, Ryan Engle, who penned the video game-inspired Rampage.
Said Diesel of the deal: “To take the classic Rock ‘em Sock ‘em game, with Mattel as my partner, and align it with the kind of world-building, franchise-making success we have had with Universal is truly exciting.”
This won’t be the end of board game inspired movies, no siree Bob. More are in various stages of planning or production, including Hungry Hungry Hippos, Magic 8-Ball, Uno and even one focussing on the classic slide viewer View-Master. OK, so that last one isn’t a board game, but we reckon it still feels somewhat relevant to this conversation as many of us had them in the games cupboard as kids.
