It may not be everybody’s cup of tea (with a nice digestive bickie), however Downton Abbey was a remarkably popular television series, which has now spawned a movie.

Yes, the tale of high society and the servant class that keeps them buoyant in a rather grand residence is coming to movie screens – and it’s going large in more ways than one.

The story revolves around the king and queen – George V and his wife, Mary – planning to drop by Downton Abbey, and the preparations and ups and downs that such a royal visit entails.

The majority of the series cast return, including Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Joanne Froggatt, Matthew Goode, Harry Hadden-Paton, David Haig, Geraldine James, Robert James-Collier, Simon Jones, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Campbell Moore, Lesley Nicol, Kate Phillips, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton and Penelope Wilton.

Downton Abbey is set to grace Australian cinemas with its presence from September 12.
