Look behind the scenes on most movie shoots and there’ll be big, big cameras. If you’d visited the set of Unsane though you’d be forgiven for thinking that director Steven Soderbergh was spending all his time playing Candy Crush.
He’s previously espoused the virtues of shooting on a humble iPhone – after all, it does do 4K – and while he’s not the first to make an entire movie with Apple’s omnipresent phone (Sean Baker’s Tangerine scores that gong) it’s fair to say that this is the biggest such release yet.
Unsane is a horror-tinged thriller, starring The Crown‘s Claire Foy and Juno Temple (Killer Joe). It revolves around a young woman who leaves home to escape her past, only to end up involuntarily committed to a mental institution, where she’s confronted by her greatest fear – but is it real, or is it delusion?
Unsane hits Australian cinemas on April 25. So, smartphoneys, you have plenty of time beforehand to make your own movie! Let us know at STACK if you do.
