Filming has begun on a sequel to the 2020 Aussie hit, The Dry. Based on author Jane Harper’s second ‘Aaron Falk’ book, the film is titled Force of Nature and is currently shooting in regional Victoria, with Eric Bana reprising his role from the first film.
Writer/director Robert Connolly is also back on board to helm the new story, with Australian Hollywood producer Bruna Papandrea and her Made Up Stories production company also back for seconds.
In The Dry, Eric Bana’s detective Aaron Falk returns to his fictional home town of Kiewarra for a funeral of a friend and finds himself assisting local police to investigate the events surrounding the death. In turn he also finds himself caught up in a 20-year murder mystery where the two events may or may not be connected and everyone is a suspect.
It was an effective and taut dramatic thriller that was received with critical acclaim and accolades, and with the calibre of Eric Bana’s name on the poster the film also performed respectfully overseas.
The upcoming sequel is adapting Harper’s second novel and will see detective Falk investigating the disappearance of a hiker who went missing in wilderness while walking with three other friends. The missing woman also happens to be a whistleblower in Falk’s latest case. Jacqueline McKenzie (Bloom) will co-star as Falk’s partner detective, with follow actresses Debra-Lee Furness (Blessed), Robin McLeavly (Homeland), Sisi Stringer (Mortal Kombat) and Lucy Ansell (Utopia) in supporting roles as the fellow hikers.
Where The Dry depicted a hot, barren rural dustbowl, Force of Nature will be adopting more dreary and wintery atmosphere, with filming taking place in green-belt areas such as the Yarra Valley, the Dandenong Ranges and the Otways.
In a tweet shared by Bana recently, he posted a photograph of a Panavision camera mounted on a tripod, standing in front of a green and ferny backdrop. His message read:
“Hello there Cinema Camera my old friend, it’s been too long. I’m thrilled to share that we have begun work on the follow up to #TheDryMovie. Returning as Aaron Falk in #ForceOfNatureMovie, based on the novel by @janeharperautho Another amazing team behind us”.
As first reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, the producers hope to turn the series into a trilogy, and with The Dry being amongst the highest grossing Australian films of 2020, accompanied with critical acclaim, the fate of the franchise will all depend on how well Force of Nature performs.
