The latest cinematic take on Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac will be with us soon, simply titled Cyrano.
The original was written entirely in rhyming verse, and this one is faithful to a degree in that it’s been turned into a musical. It’s the same story that was mined for Steve Martin’s superb Roxanne.
Peter Dinklage stars as the titular lovelorn soul, while Haley Bennett plays the object of his desire, Roxanne. Ben Mendelsohn and Kelvin Harrison Jr. also star.
Joe Wright – who’s given us the likes of Darkest Hour, Atonement and 2005’s Pride & Prejudice – directs.
Cyrano is currently booked for a February 24 Australian cinema release. Here’s the quite lovely trailer:
