It’s rumoured that Ewan McGregor is to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the new Star Wars film (Episode IX), which is due to be released in December of 2019.
The rumour follows speculation that Yoda (Frank Oz) may also be making a return in Episode IX, and the reported recent suspension (although Lucasfilm are denying that this is the case) of an Obi-Wan spinoff film following the disappointing box office of Solo: A Star Wars Story. McGregor is also believed to have filmed the Obi-Wan Kenobi scenes ‘secretly’ – his appearance at the premiere of Solo simply adding to the intrigue.
However, due to the fact that the new Star Wars films are set roughly 30 years after the last trilogy, Disney would have to come up with a creative way to include McGregor’s Obi-Wan in Episode IX, if he is to assist Rey (Daisy Ridley) with her incomplete training from the previous film, The Last Jedi.
A ghost of the Force, perhaps?
