Taika Waititi’s proposed animated Flash Gordon reboot for Disney will now be a live-action feature.

Based on the 1930s comic strip detailing the adventures of a sports star turned intergalactic hero, the character of Flash Gordon last appeared on the big screen in the campy cult classic from director Mike Hodges in 1980. And with the Kiwi filmmaker onboard for a remake, the new Flash could be just as much fun.

“He has the most fantastically interesting vision for this movie,” producer John Davis told Collider. “And you can only know it is Taika. It is what he does. It is the way he looks at the world. He is the greatest guy in the world. He is the funniest guy in the world. And he thinks on a different plane. And this movie embraces everything that’s special about Taika, and his vision. It harkens in a very interesting way to the original conception from the comics.”

With the prolific Waititi currently in post-production on Thor: Love and Thunder, Flash Gordon is presently in the development stage, leaving plenty of time to speculate on who might play the title role: Chris Hemsworth, perhaps? And just as importantly, will Queen’s theme song feature?
