Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are set to go from the past to the future as they write and produce a series of new Star Wars flicks.
These will be separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, as well as the recently-announced trilogy that’s being developed by Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
That’s a lot of forthcoming Star Wars movies then.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm supremo. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
Interesting use of the rather Trekkie word “boldly” there.
Obviously Benioff and Weiss are excited – and daunted – by the opportunity.
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” said the pair in a prepared statement. “We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
There you go, Thrones fans, you can chill – they’re not abandoning their posts.
Here’s a sneak peek at the duo’s take on George Lucas’ universe (not really, but it’s fun…)
