Well, we didn’t see this one coming – it looks like George Clooney may be playing classic comic book space hero Buck Rogers!

George is set to executive produce a new Buck Rogers television series and, according to TheWrap, he’ll also star. The idea is that it will kick off on TV then make the leap to a movie franchise – the opposite of how things went down last time.

Created by sci-fi writer Philip Francis Nowlan, the tale of mining engineer Anthony – the Buck came later – Rogers first appeared in comic form in 1928. Nowlan’s grandson, Flint Dille, is set to be on board as one of the producers.

Writing duties fall to Brian K Vaughan, who’s worked on such TV shows as Lost and Under the Dome, as well as comics series including Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina.

The last time that we saw Buck on TV was in the series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, which ran from 1979 through to 1981 and starred Gil Gerard as the titular hero. As mentioned up above there somewhere, It was a spinoff from a movie – get down with this extended trailer:
