The son of Studio Ghibli legend Hayao Miyazaki, Goro Miyazaki, has directed their first new movie in seven years, Earwig and the Witch.
It;s quite the departure for Studio Ghibli, who have become much loved for their phenomenal traditional, hand-drawn animated features over many years.
Earwig and the Witch is by English writer Diana Wynne Jones, who also created Howl’s Moving Castle. The synopsis goes like this: “In 1990s England, Earwig, a 10-year-old orphan girl who grew up without knowing that she is a witch’s daughter, is taken from the orphanage by a strange duo and starts living with them.”
After being affected by 2020 like so many other films, Earwig and the Witch is set to make its debut on Japanese TV soon, with a western launch in 2021.
Here’s a Japanese trailer. To be honest we’re not sure about the look, it kind of has an old school video game vibe to it that lacks that Ghibli magic. What do you think?
