A new Star Trek series is a pretty big deal, so no pressure on composer Jeff Russo – a self-confessed Trekkie – to get the theme for Discovery right.
The piece below combines interview snippets with the composer – also responsible musically for the likes of TV outings Fargo and The Night Of – as well as Alex Kurtzman, the co-creator and executive producer of Discovery.
Of most interest, however, is the actual theme. While there’s a nice nod to the original series opener towards the end, we’re not sure if this is as memorable as, well, any of the other series themes. What do you think?
As for the show itself, Discovery is set 10 years before the original 1960s series. The ship here is the USS Discovery, boldly going where no person has gone before – before Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew did their thing. The cast includes Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy himself!), Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead), Doug Jones (Falling Skies), Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Dwight from The Office, although he’s billed as ‘Rainn Wilson’ here.
