Horror flicks and Helen Mirren aren’t your usual movie match, which makes Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built sound all the more tempting.
It’s also an intriguing mix of scares, fantasy and history, with Dame Helen playing Sarah Winchester, the heiress to the Winchester firearms fortune. She was quite an eccentric woman, and believed that she was being haunted by those who were killed by the Winchester repeating rifle.
That was a lot of people as it turns out, and when her husband and son died mysteriously her way of handling it all was by relentlessly adding haphazardly to her sprawling mansion in an attempt to keep the vengeful spirits at bay. This brought attention of course, including that of psychiatrist Eric Price (Jason Clarke), who was dispatched to the estate to evaluate her state of mind. Was the woman mad, or was she really being haunted?
The latest from the Spierig brothers – think Undead, Daybreakers, Predestination, the new Jigsaw – this is one Helen Mirren movie that your grandma probably won’t want to check out. But we’re certainly looking forward to it.
Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built is due in Australian cinemas on February 22, 2018.
