The tagline reads “Some legends never die” and, as proven by the recent spate of legacy sequels such as Top Gun Maverick and Ghostbusters Afterlife, there’s a demand for nostalgia.
The latest movie to get a spruce up is Hocus Pocus, the quirky Halloween kids flick from 1993, which starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. It told the story of the Sanderson sisters, three witches from the 1600s, who were resurrected then wreaked havoc on modern day Salem.
It’s 29 years later and Hocus Pocus 2 will see the sisters brought back to life when three teenage girls read a passage from a book of spells.
Demand for a Hocus Pocus sequel has been high for at least 20 years, and while that might seem strange to most Australian readers, it makes a lot of sense considering that the original film has become a Halloween staple on American television. Similar to A Christmas Story being an institution in the States, Hocus Pocus has earned legions of eager fans over the years, picking up newbies with each passing generation.
The new trailer for Hocus Pocus 2 arrives with high anticipation and expectations. With the original cast back on their broomsticks, and Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) taking the directorial reins from Kenny Ortega, there’s every reason to believe that this long-awaited sequel will deliver the magic when it kicks off from September 30.
Now is the perfect time to revisit the classic original.
