If you ask most anybody their thoughts on clowns, they’ll usually tend towards the negative. Yet It has quickly become the highest grossing horror flick ever in the United States.
What does this tell us? Well, the first thing that we take from it is that Americans are a masochistic bunch.
Shunting 1973’s The Exorcist out of its way, it’s not the first record It has received. In just two weeks the creepy Pennywise has already elbowed Paranormal Activity out of the way to nab biggest opening weekend for a horror flick. Actually, according to Box Office Mojo, It has the third biggest opening so far this year, only trailing Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
It should be noted though that these figures aren’t adjusted inflation-wise, so good ol’ head-spinnin’ Linda Blair was still seen by more people in movie houses – although three cuts of the flick were shown cinematically. The Exorcist still just holds the international box office title, but with It continuing to pack out cinemas the record isn’t likely to last much longer.
Closer to home, It has topped the Australian box office the past two weeks, already taking in over A$26 million.
Needless to say, the expected It sequel – in which the Loser’s Club are all grown up – has been green-lit. Those who chose clowning as a career may be peed off, but we’re pretty sure that the psych professions will be loving the influx of coulrophobic patients.
