Now there’s a headline we never thought we’d type! Still, venerable movie mogul Scorsese actually is set to produce a new movie based upon the origin story of DC’s The Joker.
Scorsese isn’t the only big name involved, however. As Deadline reports, The Hangover series writer/director Todd Phillips has been signed up to both direct and co-write a script with Scott Silver, who has previously penned the likes of 8 Mile, The Fighter and The Finest Hours.
To be set in a 1980s Gotham City, apparently the intention is to create a gritty Scorsese-styled flick along the lines of his classic Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.
The movie will be set outside of the established DC Extended Universe, meaning there’ll likely be no connection to the existing film catalogue, and goodness knows who may get the gig as The Joker. Yes, it’s seriously early days on the project, so no casting has been completed as yet.
Whoever gets the gig, they have some pretty big clown shoes to fill, following the likes of Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, Mark Hamill – and, of course, Zach Galifianakis in The LEGO Batman Movie, which we’re really just mentioning because it’s ace.
We can’t wait to let you know more about this – as we can’t wait to know more about it ourselves!
Meanwhile, here’s some of The Joker from the classic Batman television series, showing off how great Cesar Romero was, and how amazing the recent Blu-ray remastering has made the series look…
