Many have been surprised at the success of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine swansong in Marvel’s Logan. While he’s decided to put the claws away, his protégé in the movie – Laura Kinney, aka X-23 – is set to star in her own super-flick.
It always seemed like Dafne Keen’s character would be perfect for a spinoff, but in a pre-Wonder Woman world, well, studios.
But after the runaway success of Patty Jenkins’ DC film, it’s a different (and better) world. Now Logan director James Mangold has confirmed, via The Hollywood Reporter, that an X-23 movie is in development.
“Patty’s success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist,” Mangold told THR. “The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well, here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with the Laura script right now, dreaming.”
The next 18 months are shaping up as big ones for mutant fans – uh, fans of mutants – with The New Mutants in April 2018, Deadpool 2 in June the same year, X-Men: Dark Phoenix in November and Gambit in February 2019.
Now we can add an X-23 outing to the list – we wonder which other mutants will get their chance to shine?
