Inspired by the success of Black Panther, Marvel are reported to be fast-tracking a Shang-Chi movie, which would give us our first Asian superhero protagonist heading up a huge Hollywood release.
It’s set to be penned by Chinese-American writer Dave Callaham, according to Deadline, and apparently Marvel are busy considering a number of Asian and Asian-American directors for the gig.
Callaham has decent superheroic chops, too, most recently contributing to the script for Wonder Woman 1984 , and also busy writing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. On top of that he was part of the creative team behind the fabulously big, dumb and fun The Expendables trilogy.
As for the character, Shang-Chi first appeared at the height of the martial arts movie craze back in 1973. Obviously he’ll be retooled to suit 21st century sensibilities, but this is another great blow for much-needed diversity in Hollywood from Marvel.
