It took long enough, but finally Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen star together onscreen, in upcoming dramatic thriller The Good Liar.

It’s based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Nicholas Searle, whose own story could be worked into a film. He only started writing novels at 60, having taken an online course following a working life as a civil servant. The Good Liar was the result.

The story essentially revolves around an experienced conman who finds himself starting to care for his latest mark, a woman who he targetted from her online presence.

As you’ve likely deduced, McKellen plays the slimy duplicitous type, and Mirren plays the lovely, wholesome, well-off widow target of his ill intent…

The Good Liar is due in Australian cinemas from January 23, 2020.
