The BBC has announced that the next ‘lost’ Doctor Who story to be animated for DVD and Blu-ray will be another classic from the Patrick Troughton era: The Abominable Snowmen.

Originally broadcast in 1967 and the second story in the fifth season of Doctor Who, The Abominable Snowmen is an atmospheric six-part adventure with a reputation as one of the show’s classics. It’s also notable for being the Doctor’s first encounter with the Yeti – a monster that became an instant favourite with fans and kids and quickly returned later in the season in the story The Web of Fear.

The original episode two is the only one that remains in the BBC archives today, but the original audio for all six episodes survives, allowing the animation team to recreate the story in its entirety as close as possible to the original broadcast version.

“We’re delighted to announce Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen, something Doctor Who fans have been waiting patiently for over the years,” said executive producer Russell Minton in a statement. “We’re grateful for the surviving audio-only recordings, which we are very lucky to have courtesy of several Doctor Who fans, which have allowed us to create another exciting and action-packed chapter in the Doctor’s story.”

The Abominable Snowmen is scheduled for release sometime in 2022, leaving only one incomplete story from Doctor’s Who‘s fifth season: The Wheel in Space. Two original episodes of this Cyberman story survive, making it a good candidate for the next animated release, which would bring the possibility of a Season 5 Blu-ray Collection closer to reality.
