Joining the likes of the Transformers series and Pacific Rim flicks comes classic anime big-robots-fight-now Gundam.

Yes, the popular property, which recently had a stomp-on appearance in Spielberg’s Ready Player One (now out to buy for home), is set for the live action movie thing. It’s been a huge (literally) success in many formats ranging from manga to video games to animated series and even Japanese statues (above), so this is the next logical step – especially with the world’s apparent love of massive mech biffo.

The movie was announced at Anime Expo 2018 in Los Angeles, and other than the fact that it is now officially a thing, there were no further details divulged.

Want a quick primer on Gundam? OK then, here goes…

The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted. The battles in the story, in which the characters pilot robots known as mobile suits, are wildly popular.

We’ll bring you more news on the Gundam movie when we have it. In the interim, here’s a trailer for the just-released PS4 game New Gundam Breaker
