With 4K Ultra HD becoming more and more popular as people see (and hear) just how completely cool it is, here at STACK we plan to keep you completely up-to-date with all the new releases. Here’s a summary of 4K August 2017 releases…
4K Ultra HD system demo of the month
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
This is Disney’s first 4K UHD, and if it’s an indication of quality to come from them then we’re going to be in for some real 4K treats in future. As we’d hoped, Guardians Vol. 2 looks spectacular, but it’s the absolutely huge Dolby Atmos sound mix that really elevates it to system demo status. As for the movie? It continues the fun vibe of the first, with family themes at the fore. Check out STACK’s movie review here.
What else hit 4K Ultra HD in August?
John Wick: Chapter 2
Not only did the original John Wick redefine the action film with its dark drama, slick gunplay choreography and sly humour, it was also a cracking 4K watch. Combined with its Dolby Atmos soundtrack, John Wick has become one of our favourite movies with which to convert our friends to the 4K cause.
This sequel sees Keanu Reeves back as the titular hitman, dragged out of retirement – again – to repay a debt. Oh, and his dog’s alive and well! However, somebody’s put a price on Wick’s head, so it isn’t long before the body count heads north at a great rate of knots. Largely set in Rome, the 4K upgrade transfer is superb, and really given extra oomph via HDR. The Dolby Atmos soundtrack (don’t believe the back of the case, which incorrectly claims that it features DTS:X instead) even outshines that of the first Wick flick, and it really starts pumping right from the start. A commentary with Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski is a highlight amongst a raft of special features.
The Fate of the Furious
The eighth in the Fast series comes to 4K disc with a cool transfer accompanied by a thumping DTS:X Master Audio soundtrack. Another movie which revolves around extended family, the ‘Fast’ series still delivers exciting popcorn thrills. Check out STACK’s movie review here.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
Another huge August release was Guy Ritchie’s spectacular take on the classic Arthurian tale. A raft of bonus features includes a wonderful look at the incredible beauty of Scotland, where much of the film was shot. This is another one that gives your Dolby Atmos systems a thoroughly exciting workout. Check out STACK’s movie review here.
Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant hit in August – and it wasn’t alone! The previous series instalment, 2012’s Prometheus, has also been given the 4K disc treatment. A fabulous Dolby Atmos soundtrack booms from the Covenant disc, while the package also contains a Blu-ray stuffed with a huge array of deleted scenes, a making-of doco and more. Seeing out the month was the big guy, Dwayne Johnson, looking clearer than ever in this 4K upgrade as he dons the boardies. The action comedy rip on the David Hasselhoff TV original also features Dolby Atmos audio, and comes with several featurettes and deleted scenes. Check out STACK’s movie review here.
As we hinted at earlier in the month, back catalogue titles dug their fangs in with Dracula Untold and Van Helsing both popping out. Check out our Dracula Untold review here, and our Van Helsing review here. Remember, stay tuned to STACK for all the latest 4K info.
