Rick and Morty and the Star Trek universe are set to cross streams, with an adult-oriented animated series of the latter coming from R&M head writer Mike McMahan.

Entitled Star Trek: Lower Decks, two seasons of the half-hour comedy show have been ordered, according to Deadline.

Yes, comedy. Somewhere that Star Trek hasn’t often intentionally boldly gone before.

Apparently the show will orbit around the support crew that serves on one of Starfleet’s least important ships.

“Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.’” said CBS’ Star Trek supremo Alex Kurtzman of McMahan’s involvement. “He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every Trek episode, and that’s his secret sauce: he writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of Trek to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.”

As all good fans will tell you, this isn’t the first time that Star Trek has become animated, although it was way back in 1973 when we were treated to Star Trek: The Animated Series.
