The first Force Friday occurred in 2015 to celebrate the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now, with Star Wars: The Last Jedi looming, Force Friday II is imminent – and it appears that it’s going to be big. Maybe not Death Star big, but pretty darned big.
Disney and Lucasfilm have decreed that ‘Find the Force’, a global augmented reality event, will be happening over three days from September 1.
A pop-up AR treasure hunt will aim to unite fans worldwide in the battle against the dark side at over 20,000 retail locations across 30 countries. Buy a new product from the massive The Last Jedi merch machine and get the opportunity to activate a unique augmented reality experience, featuring 15 Star Wars characters in all. We’re promised both fan faves and new surprise additions from the forthcoming film.
Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, is enthusiastic: “Force Friday II is a major milestone in the countdown to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Star Wars has always championed new technology, and we are excited that augmented reality will allow fans to experience the universe in a whole new way.”
Sure, but how will this thing work? Well, first you download the Star Wars app (unless you have a Windows Phone, of course, in which case you just have to poutily watch everybody else have all the fun). Then, visit any one of 20,000 participating stores to uncover a special ‘Find the Force’ logo and scan it via the app. This will reveal a character, who’ll appear to pop into the room with you thanks to the tech-wizardry of AR. Take photos, record videos and plaster your lovely self all over social media and such sharing could even see you winning tickets to the Star Wars: The Last Jedi premiere in December.
The latest version of the Star Wars app is now available for download on Android and iPhone.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi swoops into Australian cinemas on December 14. Meanwhile, here’s a cryptic message from General Leia Organa…
