If you thought that the third trilogy of Star Wars flicks was it for main canon then think again, as a fourth trilogy has been given the green light.

As Star Wars: The Last Jedi – the eighth main episode – looms larger than the Death Star, its director, Rian Johnson, has been handed the keys to creating a whole new trilogy. It’s to be separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, though, according to StarWars.com. This trilogy is set to introduce new characters “from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored”.

What do we read into this? Well, on top of there being Star Wars flicks for many, many a year to come, Disney and Lucasfilm are obviously pretty chuffed with Johnson’s work on The Last Jedi. Actually, Lucasfilm overlord Kathleen Kennedy has basically said as much.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

Johnson isn’t feeling any pressure – much. He tweeted:

The Last Jedi will shoom into Aussie cinemas on December 15.
