The last time we had a Super Mario movie it was a bit of a disaster. Live action? Seriously?! Now, 22 years later, it looks like we’ll be getting a new animated take on the former plumber’s busy life.
Illumination – the animation gurus behind the Despicable Me series, The Secret Life of Pets, Sing and such – are within a Minion’s hair of completing a deal with Nintendo to make an animated Super Mario movie, according to The Wall Street Journal.
It makes sense, with Illumination’s partners Universal recently doing a deal to feature Nintendo’s iconic characters in their theme parks.
We can be assured, too, that the result will look nothing like the picture above (the brilliant picture, by Chilean artist Maggotx9).
Arguably the most enduring video game character ever, Mario is riding another wave of success currently with the astoundingly great game Super Mario Odyssey (read STACK‘s review here). While there’s no word of anything regarding a plot for the movie, Mario is easily adaptable to most any situation. Nintendo guru Shigeru Miyamoto is reportedly going to be involved in some capacity to ensure that things are kept on the rails. After all, that 1993 outing burned harder than the fiery pits of Bowser’s castle.
UPDATE: The news has been confirmed, and the info from November 2017 above was right on the money (insert Mario coin nabbing sound here). It will be co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri.
