With James Cameron back behind the production wheel of the Terminator movies for the first time since 1991, we’re really going back to the future. Now awesome original action heroine Linda Hamilton’s also on board for the latest entry into the series.
To be directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool), the as-yet untitled new flick will see both Arnie and Linda Hamilton duking it out, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It will exist in a world where any Terminator movies after 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day don’t exist, so will follow on from that flick’s story.
It will, however, be introducing newer, younger characters to take on the fight against Cyberdyne Systems over a planned three movie arc.
“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the centrepiece of the new story,” Cameron says. “We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
Hamilton’s Sarah Connor was a revelation back in 1984, a time when action women were a distinct rarity. Now, with the return of Hamilton, Cameron is keen to make another such groundbreaking blow for girl power.
“There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys,” he says, “but there isn’t an example of that for women.”
Well, maybe the two Red movies, but he makes a really good point.
With the original threesome on-board for the upcoming flick, we reckon there’s reason to be genuinely excited for a new Terminator.
Thank you for your cooperation, good night. Oh, hang on, that’s Robocop. Erm, hasta la vista, baby?
